George Marshall
In talking about the great environmental activism work of Louis and Bob Marshall we cannot leave out George Marshall. Son of Louis and brother of Bob - he accomplished many of the same feats as Bob - including climbing all 46 Adirondack High Peaks.
George was a constitutional lawyer like his father and had a love for conservation and preservation of the wilderness. He dedicated much of his time to the Wilderness Society and the Sierra Club holding positions in each. In the Wilderness Society he was their president from 1957 to 1961 and was editor of their magazine. And for the Sierra Club he served on their Board of Directors from 1959 to 1968. George was also active with Robert Marshall Wilderness Foundation.
George honored his beliefs and his bother Bob’s in many ways including the publication of Bob’s journal writings about Alaska into a book published in 1956 called Alaska Wilderness: Exploring the Central Brooks Range. It was Bob Marshall’s time in Alaska, his writings and George’s publication of them that finally created the Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska.
